... a message from our coordinator, Bruce, K2BRG...
On May 5, 2009, The NOAA Hurricane Awareness Tour came to Republic
Aiport in Farmingdale. Nassau County Skywarn was invited to demonstrate
Amateur Radio and discuss the Skywarn program with both the general
public and over 500 school kids from schools all over the NYC/LI area.
A great time was had by all.
The Skywarn booth was staffed by Deputy Coordinator, Larry, N2VGA and
myself. NCARES also participated and supported our activities. Harris, NY3H
and Jim, W2KFV spent a good deal of time operating mobile. The kids got a
real kick speaking with them while tracking their vehicles on APRS.
This was a fantastic event that allowed us to present Amateur Radio to kids
ranging from the fourth grade through high school- and their science
teachers. We handed out hundreds of league brochures as well as Skywarn and
NCARES materials.
Our thanks and appreciation go out Brian Ciemnecki, KC2UHT (our Skywarn
Coordinator), Gary Conte, KC2UHS, and Ross Dickman, all from the NWS office
in Upton. We also thank the NOAA/NHC meteorologists and flight crew of
the Miss Piggy P-3 Hurricane Hunter aircraft for their hospitality
and informative discussions.
Of course, thank you to all the Skywarn and NCARES members that stopped by the booth
to lend their support.
We are now well into May and we can continue to see an increase in thunderstorm
activity as we head for summer. Please be sure to keep an eye on the weather
and ear on 146.805. Make weather awareness part of your daily routine!
Whether you have formal Skywarn training or not, your participation is welcome.
If you are a spotter and not an Amateur Radio operator, you can participate
directly with the NWS. Of course, if you are interested in obtaining your
Amateur Radio license, we can help get you trained and licensed!
If you have any questions, suggestions and ideas- please feel free to contact myself
or our Deputy Coordinator, Larry, N2VGA.
73 and safe spotting,
Bruce, K2BRG
Nassau County SKYWARN Coordinator
